What are the Pros and Cons for men to enroll on Child Support voluntarily ? What is my best option?

  • By: David Bliven

Q: I’m based in NYC and have a 14-year-old son with a woman I’ve had ongoing challenges communicating with. I’ve been a committed father since day one, consistently providing monthly financial support based on a verbal agreement—not through the courts. While I’ve occasionally sent it late, I’ve always paid retroactively with interest, and I also give my son additional funds beyond the agreed amount. Unfortunately, communication with his mother has become increasingly hostile—she’s often disrespectful and aggressive—and I’m no longer willing to engage in that dynamic. I’m seriously considering putting myself on formal child support to create clear boundaries and reduce direct contact. I also have growing concerns that the money I provide may not be fully benefiting my son as intended, and I feel unsure about the best next step.

A: There’s no such thing as “putting yourself on child support.” Whether the mother wants a child support order paid thru the courts is up to her. That said, your issue seems more on of visitation and/or joint custody. As such, I’d recommend filing a Petition on 1 of those issues (or both). Call a Bronx Child Support Attorney to schedule a consult for a full assessment.
