The Divorce is final. The wife got to keep the car but the car is registered in husbands name. Can he take the plates off the car?

  • By: David Bliven

Q– Judge ruled she gets to keep the car. But the car is registered in husband name. A month later the wife didn’t registered the car in her name. So the ex husband went and took the plates off the car without telling her.

A- The courts tend to frown upon such “self-help” methods. The proper thing for him to have done is to send the ex-wife a default notice letter – & if she refused to turn in the plates & re-register the car in her name, file a motion for contempt with the divorce court. For a full assessment, schedule a consult with a Westchester Divorce Attorney.
