How should we split the college tuition if both the parents and grandparents are contributing?

  • By: David Bliven

Q: If Parent A and Parent B split their child’s college tuition but then the parents of Parent A pay some tuition, does that come off the top or is that subtracted from Parent A’s obligation?

A: If the Parents of Parent A did not intend it to be a joint payment on behalf of both parents, then generally it would be considered a gift (by them) to Parent A. But one would need to know more of the history & background of the situation to render a definitive opinion. Call a Westchester Child Support attorney for more info.
