Q-My daughter known my boyfriend since she was 4 and wants him to adopt her. Her biological father hasn’t been in her life. The last time she seen him was 8 years ago. She said whats the point of having her biological dad’s last name. Even though she says theres no point in the last name she’s use to having it but wants to honor my boyfriend by adding his last name to her name. We aren’t legally married so I’m not sure if that’s a problem. And if adoption isn’t possible would I be able to add the last name instead.
A-I would not recommend involving the child in the adoption process at this point. Instead, you should file the adoption with the Family Court – they will ultimately require that notice of the adoption be served on the biological father.
